I have to say this has taken me a bit by surprise. I didn't think she was ready. But it looks like we are going to start potty training. I think going 3 times on the potty proves that. It's so cute to see her sit there, then she throws her little fists up in the air and WooHoo's (that's her new thing). Now I have to go out and find some tiny panties for that itty bitty bum. She is 30 lbs and still wears size 3 diapers (they go up to 28 lbs). She's just a skinny little thing.
But I've not said much to many people about what we are working on with her. She still doesn't talk much. She wasn't really saying anything until I made an appointment with an early intervention center, then she started blabbing away, of course. But even now with all the blabbering, she doesn't say actual words unless prompted. So they came and evaluated her, and she qualifies for their services. She's also had fine motor skill delays all her life. It didn't really concern me because she eventually would catch up. It was the big delay in talking that alerted me. In their initial evaluation, they said her cognitive skills were behind, but if you spend a little time with her, you would see that she picks up on things very quickly, and she's really a very smart little girl. She is very expressive with her face, just not verbally.
So last week she had her first therapy visit, and yesterday was her second. Yesterday didn't go so well because it was later in the day, and her siblings were home and she had been a beastie all day. But they are teaching her sign language and after a day and a half, she used one of the signs with me. I didn't think she was paying attention to me when I was showing her, but then she came up to me later and told me she wanted something to eat.
Today, she has an appointment with her doctor to check on her development, and on Friday she goes to an ENT for a hearing test. We have already had the transition appointment, because the center only goes up to age three then they fall into the school district's realm. After her birthday, she will be going to preschool, and I don't know if I'm ready for that. She seems to be so young to me. It will only be a couple of hours a day a couple times a week. But if she needs it, she needs it.
What happened to my baby?

That is awesome that she is ready to potty train. Good Luck. We are working on Tanner-very slowly may I add. If you have any pointers about potty training boys send them my way. Good luck with all the other tests and things with Kaydee. It sounds like she is making progress. Tanner will start preschool next year...I am thinking in September. He will be almost 4 but has a late birthday. I want to have him potty-trained too before he starts going. Keep me updated on everything with Kaydee.
Lucky!!!! christian doesn't seem to understand the concept though he does like to remove his diapers.
that is great that she is doing sign language. christian can do a few signs but he still will not do them unless preompted. same with talking. he can say some words but doesn't seem like he understands what they mean. at least kaydee told you when she wanted something to eat. christian still can not express desire. but we will just keep on keepin' on and he will figure it out someday.
Megan, the secret to potty training: Let them take the lead. Also, boys typically will start later and take longer. My boys weren't trained until after their 4th birthdays. When I let Lena take the lead, we had her potty trained in 3 weeks. Lots of praise and celebration helps. I'm sure that Kaydee will take longer than a few weeks.
Beth, have you had his hearing checked by a doctor? Also what did they say about his cognitive skills? At first they said Kaydee's cognitive was behind, but she follows directions quite well and can pick up on stuff. I guess that shows she can hear us well too, but I'm still having her hearing checked anyway because the words she tries to say that involve her palate come out sounding much like what a deaf person sounds like when they talk.
Her appointment earlier this week went well. He sees no problems. She does drool alot still, and he said that kids will do that up to age 3. If she's still doing it after her birthday, then we will get a neurologist involved. Drooling can be a neurological thing. I didn't know that.
That is tiny! My almost 5 month old is wearing size 3! He is a big boy! No fear no more diapers for you!!!
