Update on the Kaydee

We saw the genticist again this week. She said that since Kaydee's cousin tested negative for Fragile X, the chances of Kaydee having it is reduced. But it's still not out of the question. The importance of this Microarray test they wanted to do has decreased at this point. Who knows, we still may want to do it in the future. Due to some other characteristics Kaydee has, like her clumsiness and her large head (which is honestly just a family trait from my side of the family), they want to do an MRI, a blood test for a metabolic screening, and have her evaluated by a developmentalist. It sounds rather frustrating to be given the run around like this, but this is actually good news. Our insurance is very much likely to cover these three things, so we can move forward right away.

What was also discussed was that we may never figure out why Kaydee is such a late bloomer, and why she struggles to grasp some basic things. I understand that. The human brain is a very complex organ. But not knowing what we're facing certainly makes it hard to know what to expect for her future. What kind of schooling will she need after kindergarten, for Jr High or high school? How long will she need all these therapies? Will we put too much pressure on her to learn and do certain things that may be beyond her capability at the time? So many questions.

What we do know for sure is that she is one darn special little girl. She captures the hearts of all that interact with her. She is very loving and finds something to like about almost everyone, even if it's just their elbows (she's told me several times that she likes my elbows). She can be very entertaining, especially when she's giving attitude. I found out recently that quite a few people find it amusing when she's giving us the stink-eye during sacrament meeting. She has perfected that look with a lot of practice. She's my little fighter, in more ways than one but we'll only focus on the good fighting here. I know that I would get frustrated with having to go over the same things over and over until I learned it. Kaydee seems willing to  do it. How many times would you want circles and squares and red and blue shoved in your face? But she keeps working, keeps trying. Sometimes you can tell she's frustrated, but she'll just roll her eyes, sigh and try again. I love that kid. I love what she teaches me about perseverance, because you definitely need that to want to be around cranky Kaydee. ☺

Being her mom is definitely trying and energy sapping. It can often be emotionally draining. But I wouldn't trade her for anything. I would however trade her tantrums for a diagnosis. ♥
